Blurring the line between art and documentary, Behemoth presents us with sublime images of a tragic reality: the northern Chinese grasslands are gradually giving way to vast open-pit coal mines. Paradis

by Alexander Abaturov
France, Switzerland | 2022 | 1h29
Language: Yakut and Russian with French subtitles

In the summer of 2021, an extreme heatwave and severe drought triggered massive wildfires that ravaged 19 million hectares in northeastern Siberia. In this region, at the heart of the taiga, the village of Shologon became shrouded in a thick cloud of smoke. Black ash carried by the wind brought alarming news: the forest was burning, and the flames were drawing near. Abandoned by the government and left to fend for themselves, the villagers must unite to fight the Dragon.

Awards:

  • 2023 - Opening film Cinéma du Réel
  • 2023 - Nominated for Hong Kong International Film Festival
  • 2022 - Nominated for the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival

Following the screening, a discussion will take place with Olric de Gélis, Director of the Research Center at the Collège des Bernardins, and Alexander Abaturov, the film’s director.
