Collaboration formats
Atelier LUMA approaches each part of its work as an opportunity to initiate research and build networks. This is made possible through a wide variety of partnership configurations, from direct participation to collaboration.
LUMA Arles supports Atelier LUMA’s development abroad and in new fields by contributing to designing collaborations suited to our partners’ ecosystems. The following list is not exhaustive.
European projects
Atelier LUMA supports international research by taking part in numerous European projects. As participants, initiators, or contributors, we work with many different peer institutions to produce and disseminate research. Our identity as a “third” type of research institution working at the intersection of science and design allows us to make contributions in fields such as biomaterials and architectural research.
Research partnership
Atelier LUMA establishes partnerships with research institutions that share the same areas of interest, commitments, and research questions. The partnerships allow respective teams to share expertise as well as technical and financial resources. Are developed partnerships in the areas of: research into alternative resources, the development of raw materials, the formulation of materials, and the production of objects and architectural products, among others.
Contract research
Atelier LUMA works with public and private institutions to define the scope of their own bioregions through field investigations. The goal is to develop applied research for their territory’s environment and activities. Atelier LUMA designs tailored projects in which they conduct research and provide guidance, and work together to develop proposals tied to specific geographic zones, raw materials, and local social and economic challenges.
Public programming and events
Alongside their work, Atelier LUMA's teams organizes public events such as talks, symposiums, and panel discussions. As initiators, hosts, or participants, with members of the team or through experts, they design ways to share the knowledge produced internally as well as the know-how and expertise of partners.
Collaborative residencies
Atelier LUMA hosts design and production residencies for designers to collaborate with their teams. This time together allows residents to activate Atelier LUMA's research using their own expertise and approaches. By invitation only, the residents immerse themselves in the provided spaces and the teams, developing projects that are relevant to their own practices as well as to Atelier LUMA's activities and research topics.
Educational programs
Atelier LUMA designs educational programs in partnership with schools and universities in France and abroad. They develop offers that fit the pedagogical goals of our partners, and mobilize teams to run them. The programs can take the form of comprehensive courses or occasional training.
Exhibitions
Atelier LUMA organizes and participates in exhibitions that share our work and that of our partners. We approach exhibitions as opportunities for discussion, and augment them with public events, residencies, and workshops held in our spaces in Arles and in partner institutions.
Workshops
Atelier LUMA collaborates with training organizations and institutions to host workshops related to their research and production. These learning programs are an opportunity to connect local stakeholders and experiment on a large scale using the spaces and specialized equipment in Le Magasin Électrique. They are open to professionals as well as to the general public.
